Procedures & Conditions

Ordered by the 6R hierarchy — preservation and reconstruction first, realignment and replacement only when the right answer.

Restore / Repair

ACL Reconstruction

Primary and revision ACL reconstruction using graft selection tailored to the patient. Hamstring graft (quadrupled semi-tendinosis with internal brace) for most patients; bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) graft for high-demand athletes requiring maximum graft stiffness. Arthroscopic technique using Arthrex instrumentation throughout.

Restore / Realign

Patellofemoral Stabilisation

Patellar instability and patellofemoral pain in adolescent and adult patients. Procedures include MPFL reconstruction for recurrent dislocation and tibial tubercle osteotomy where malalignment is a contributing factor. Paediatric and growth-plate-sparing techniques where appropriate.

Restore / Total

Total Knee Replacement

For end-stage tri-compartmental arthritis where biological options are exhausted. Mr Ross-Thriepland uses the Zimmer PPK fixed bearing and Zimmer Persona implant systems — and is robot-trained and certified in Mako robotic-arm assisted knee arthroplasty, enabling sub-millimetre implant positioning.

Restore / Repair

Multi-Ligament & Complex Reconstruction

Multi-ligament knee injuries and complex instability including revision ACL, posterolateral corner, and combined reconstructions. These are often technically demanding cases requiring careful staging and planning — Mr Ross-Thriepland has specific fellowship training in this area.

Restore / Repair

Meniscal Repair & Transplantation

Meniscal preservation is always the priority. Where repair is possible, it is preferred over removal.

I have experience in cartilage transplantation and cartilage restoration procedures and can discuss these options where appropriate. These cases are generally managed through specialist NHS cartilage centres, where patients can access the expertise required for complex cartilage treatment.

Realign

High Tibial Osteotomy

Mechanical axis correction to redistribute load away from arthritic compartments — preserving the native joint and delaying or avoiding replacement in younger, active patients. Mr Ross-Thriepland uses the Joint Operations New Clip osteotomy plate system for consistent, stable fixation.

Resurface

Cartilage Restoration

Focal cartilage defects in younger, active patients can be treated before end-stage arthritis develops. Options include microfracture, osteochondral grafting (OATS), and cell-based techniques — selected on the basis of defect size, location, and patient factors.

Replace / Partial

Unicompartmental Knee Replacement

When only one compartment is arthritic, replacing only the worn surface preserves native ligaments, proprioception, and bone stock — with faster recovery and a more natural feel than total replacement. A strong advocate of UKR in well-selected patients.

Restore / Repair

Adolescent & Paediatric Knee

Knee problems in children and teenagers including physeal-sparing ACL reconstruction, osteochondritis dissecans, and patellar instability in skeletally immature patients. Fellowship-trained in paediatric knee surgery at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
